Answering Your WorkCover or CTP Psychological Intervention Questions
Do I need an approved claim before I start seeing a psychologist?
In most cases, psychological treatment under the NSW SIRA scheme begins once your claim is accepted and your nominated treating GP has referred you for care.
Your GP will usually issue a medical certificate and, where needed, submit an allied health recovery request to the insurer handling your claim to seek approval for sessions.
If you’re unsure where you are in the process, we are happy to help you understand your next step.
Will my employer or the insurance company see what I share in sessions?
Your sessions are a confidential. As part of the workers’ compensation or CTP scheme, we do share progress updates and treatment plan information with your nominated treating GP and the insurer to support your recovery.
But the personal details of what you discuss remain private, with limited exceptions that we’ll always explain to you clearly.
How long will I need support for?
There’s no single answer, because sustainable recovery looks different for everyone. Some people need short-term psychological support after a workplace or motor vehicle injury, while related trauma or more complex psychological injuries may benefit from longer care.
We review your progress regularly with you and your treating team, so support continues only as long as it’s needed.
Will there be any out-of-pocket costs?
When your workers’ compensation or CTP claim is accepted and your insurer approves your sessions, the cost of your psychological treatment is fully covered, meaning no out-of-pocket costs for you. We’ll always be upfront about anything that falls outside approved treatment, so there are no surprises.
Are motor vehicle accidents treated the same as WorkCover?
Recovery after a motor vehicle accident is managed under a separate scheme (CTP), but the care we offer is much the same: injury-focused, evidence-based support for the mental and emotional impacts of the accident.
Can psychological support really help a physical or psychological injury?
A physical injury often carries mental and emotional impacts too, from chronic pain and workplace stress to low mood or psychological trauma.
Similarly, a psychological injury can significantly affect your emotional well-being, relationships, daily functioning and ability to return to work. With the right psychological support, you can develop effective coping strategies, rebuild confidence and work towards meaningful recovery.
Recovery takes a team, and through regular communication with your GP and other treatment providers, we aim to support your overall well-being, not just one part of it.
What's the goal of treatment?
Treatment aims to help clients overcome the psychological effects of a workplace or motor vehicle injury and move forward with confidence. For many people, that means a well-supported return to work and activities of daily living and, wherever possible, a return to normal or better quality of life.
