What is Depression?
While it is normal to have occasional low days, depression is when these feelings take hold and last for weeks, months, or even years. It is not just a temporary setback—it’s a pervasive experience that affects your mind, body, and relationships. We understand that depression affects us on multiple levels. Biologically it can impact your energy, sleep, appetite, and motivation, often leaving you feeling fatigued, restless, or numb. Psychologically it alters the way you see yourself, the world, and others. It can bring about feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, and a sense of disconnection, sometimes leading to suicidal thoughts. Socially it often drives people to withdraw from loved ones.
Treatment for Depression
At PsychWell, we understand that there is no one-size-fits-all treatment for depression, which is why a client-centred, holistic approach is taken, blending traditional evidence-based therapies with innovative new treatments. The focus is on discovering what works best for each individual, recognizing that everyone’s journey is unique. Whether through therapy, medication, or a combination of approaches, support is provided throughout the process
Some individuals may recover with the support of family and friends, but for others, professional support is essential. A GP is often a good place to start, as they can assess whether medications, such as antidepressants, may help. They may also refer to a psychologist for evidence-based therapeutic support. In some cases, a psychiatrist may be needed for a more comprehensive assessment or to explore more advanced treatments.
